    About the Internet and VoIP
What is broadband or high-speed Internet connection?
Broadband access and high-speed Internet access are terms used to indicate a connection that provides very fast Internet access sufficient to carry multiple voice, video, and/or data transmissions simultaneously. There are several types of broadband or high-speed connections such as cable modem, DSL, T-1, Fractional T-1, or T-3. Most broadband Internet connections are fast enough to support Nikkom service.
You can check your internet connection speed by clicking here http://www.dslreports.com/test and following the simple steps. Note: We do not recommend Nikkom service for dial-up Internet access.

    What is VOIP?
VoIP, or "Voice over Internet Protocol" refers to sending voice and fax phone calls over data networks, particularly the Internet. This technology offers cost savings by making more efficient use of the existing network. VOIP provides the same quality as a traditional phone service, but you receive more features and pay far less for calls around the world.

What is a router and do I need one?
A router is a network device that manages the distribution of data to and from multiple devices on that network. A router will allow you to use both your Nikkom service and computer to surf the web.
It is recommended to connect the adapter to the router. However, if you don't have one, the adapter you will get from Nikkom can be used as a router.

    Which router should I use?
Nikkom recommends that you purchase a DSL/cable web-safe router that will provide NAT and DHCP for your network. Although Nikkom service will work with most routers available for purchase today, we do not recommend a specific brand. If you are having trouble with your Nikkom service on an older model router, Nikkom recommends that you download and install the router's latest firmware from the manufacturer's web site.

    Nikkom Basics
Is Nikkom service cell phone or wireless phone service?
No. Nikkom is not a cell phone service provider, but rather a telephone service using high-speed Internet connections only. However, you can use a traditional wireless household telephone connected to the Nikkom adaptor.

Does the person I am calling need to have your service too?
No, you can call anyone or any phone. Use your Nikkom line as you would use any phone. No matter what service your friend uses, the call is FREE.

Do I need to have my computer turned on to talk on the phone?
No. Your Nikkom service works independently from your computer so your computer does not need to be turned on.

Must I speak through the computer to use your service?
No. Nikkom service operates independently of the computer. You speak through a telephone connected to the Nikkom provided adapter. Note: Nikkom service supports SoftPhone clients for use over your PC or laptop. A SoftPhone client is software that, once installed and executed, allows your computer with a microphone and speakers to act as a phone directly connected to your Nikkom service. Quality of sound will be dependent on your computer's audio equipment.

What types of telephones work with your service?
Most analog phones of your choice can be used with your Nikkom service. Typically household phones are analog. Corded or cordless telephones work exceptionally well.
Remember, your Nikkom service comes with free voicemail included. So, you do not need to utilize an answering machine at home. However, if you choose to use a home based answering machine and your voicemail feature is currently active remember to turn off your voicemail feature from your Nikkom web account.
The default setting for voicemail is 'on' when you first activate your Nikkom service.

Can I use multiple phone extensions with the phone adapter?
There are two ways to plug multiple handsets into your Phone Adaptor:
You can purchase a multi-line jack adapter, and then connect it to the phone port of the Phone Adaptor. This will allow you to have multiple phones wired on a single Nikkom line. These adapters are readily available at retail locations that sell home telephone accessories, such as RadioShack.
Some of our customers use cordless phone systems that come with a base unit and extra handsets. The base station of the cordless telephone plugs directly into the Phone Adaptor. Multiple handsets can be placed anywhere in the house. Cordless phone systems are available at most major consumer electronic retail locations.

I have a fax machine. Can I use it with Nikkom?
No, Nikkom service does not support fax machines.

What area codes do you have available?
Nikkom undoes what we normally think of area codes. Rather than your area code being based on where your phone is, you can have any area code you want from our list of available area codes. That's right, if you live in Boston, you can have a Los Angeles area code. So, if you have friends, family or business ties to the Los Angeles area, they would simply dial a Los Angeles number and be connected to your Nikkom number in Boston.
But of course you can have a Boston area code if you would like, or you can have both. Nikkom enables you to have two (2) Alternate numbers associated with a single, active Nikkom line. Alternate numbers are just $3.95 per month (pro-rated the first month) and can be added at any time by accessing the features tab at your Nikkom Account Portal.
Nikkom is constantly adding area codes. You can email us at support@Nikkom.com to be notified when the area code you want becomes available.

Can I cancel at any time?
Yes. You can cancel your service at any time. If you decide to cancel, you will have to send us back the adapter in its original box in 14 days. If you decided to keep the adapter, you will be subject to the $59.95 disconnect fee. The disconnect fee is waived upon return of the device to us in good condition.

    Is Nikkom service Mac compatible?
Yes. Nikkom service and your Nikkom web account are both Mac compatible. Your Nikkom web account is accessible via any web browser type, and from any Internet connection worldwide.

    Billing & Rates
What are the initial start-up costs? How much will it cost monthly?
You will never look at your phone bill the same way again. Nikkom may just be the most cost- efficient telephone service you will find. Costs for Nikkom service depend on which of our great rate plans you select and what equipment you need.

Are there any hidden costs with Nikkom?

With Nikkom service you simply do not have to manage your minutes. The only extra charges are directory assistance calls. If you select the Nikkom Unlimited Plan, all calls to 23 countries, except for directory assistance calls and cell phones, are included in the basic monthly plan service charge.

    What are your international rates?
Nikkom always offers low international rates. Check the "International Rates" page.

Will I receive a paper bill?
No, Nikkom billing is viewable on-line at your Nikkom web account only. You can view your service usage, charges and all account activities for any billing period on line 24/7/365. Payments for Nikkom service are via credit card only. We do this to keep costs low for our customers.

Can I keep my current phone number with your service?
Local Number Portability (LNP) is available in most states. Please call customer service to learn if your number can be ported.

Does it cost anything to transfer my current number?
Same number. Better phone company- where talk IS cheap! Recently federal legislation instituted that phone companies allow customers to take their number with them if they choose another company.
This is called 'porting'. Porting your existing number to your Nikkom service is free and simple.

Will I be listed in the telephone book if I switch to a Nikkom number?
Yes. Telephone books do list Nikkom numbers.

    Nikkom and Your Internet Service
Is Internet service provided with my Nikkom account?
No. Nikkom is not an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and does not provide internet service. You must already have broadband high-speed internet service to use your Nikkom service.

Does Nikkom work with dial-up Internet access?
No. To use Nikkom Service you must have a Broadband or high-speed Internet service such as high-speed cable modem, DSL, T-1, Fractional T-1, or T3 connection.

Does Nikkom service work with satellite-provided internet service?
No. Nikkom service does not support internet service provided by satellite.

Does Nikkom work with Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)?
Nikkom does not recommend using Windows ICS because the default lease time is automatically set for just 6 minutes. To work properly, the Nikkom Phone Adapter needs a virtually infinite lease time to prevent the phone adapter from rebooting during a call. This can be achieved by purchasing a DSL/cable web-safe router that provides NAT and DHCP for your network.

    Nikkom and Your Network
Does my network router work with Nikkom?
Most recently manufactured network routers will work with your Nikkom service right out of the box. If not, or if you are using an early generation router, likely only minor modification(s) or a firmware download to your router's setting will need to be done. Settings modifications are usually part of the router's configuration software and can be reviewed in the router's instructions. Nikkom is not aware of every router on the market. Therefore, we will gladly receive your comments regarding your experience and put your valuable information into our product knowledge base for other Nikkom users to access.

Can I be subscribe to Nikkom service and use my existing home networking equipment?
Sure. Although it is not required, Nikkom works easily with your existing home network if it supports DHCP and Network Address Translation (NAT). NAT is the translation of an Internet Protocol (IP) address in one network to a known but different IP address in another network.

Does Nikkom service work with wireless ISP networks?
Yes. You can connect to Nikkom if your wireless Internet Service Provider (ISP) or your home network provides an available Ethernet connection into which you can connect your Nikkom Phone Adapter. Many Nikkom customers have wireless networks in their home or subscribe to wireless ISP.

What ports do I need to open if my Nikkom Phone Adapter is behind a firewall?
No ports have to be opened up for Nikkom to work properly if the phone is behind a simple NAT and the Nikkom-issued Phone Adapter has a private IP address. Most of our customers just connect to their phone adapter and use the service because Nikkom has designed the service to work behind NATs, which keeps the Nikkom Phone Adapter available at all times. If you have a firewall, you must give the Nikkom Phone Adapter rights to access certain Internet ports, including 69-69 UDP, 5060-5063 UDP, and 10,000-20,000 UDP. If you plan to connect your PC to the Internet as well, the IP address for the Nikkom Phone Adapter can either be provided by your ISP or your network router (when the router is set to DHCP).

If my PC connects to the internet through the USB port and has no Ethernet connection, how can the Nikkom phone adapter fit into my network?
To use Nikkom service you will need to convert your high-speed Internet connection from USB to Ethernet. You can convert by connecting your PC and your phone adapter to a router. To connect your PC to the router, you will also need to install an Ethernet card in your PC, or you can use a USB-to-Ethernet conversion cable. With this arrangement, you can use your PC to access the Internet while using your Nikkom service.

    Nikkom Features
Can I use multiple phone handsets with the phone adapter?
There are three ways to plug multiple handsets into your Phone Adaptor. Please note that currently only phone port 1 is used by our service.
    1. You can purchase a multi-line jack adapter, and then connect it to the phone port of the Phone Adaptor. This will allow you to have multiple phones wired on a single Nikkom line. These adapters are readily available at retail locations that sell home telephone accessories, such as Home Depot.
    2. Some of our customers use cordless phone systems that come with a base unit and extra handsets. The base station of the cordless telephone plugs directly into the Phone Adaptor. Multiple handsets can be placed anywhere in the house. Cordless phone systems are available at most major consumer electronic retail locations.
    3. You can purchase wireless phone jacks. The base unit connects to the Phone Adaptor and the wireless jacks plug into your household electrical outlets. A telephone connects to the wireless jack. Please note that only the phone attached to the base unit will display Caller ID information. Although wireless phone jacks may accomplish multiple home extensions, you may periodically experience dropped calls on the extension phones and an inability to talk on more than one phone at a time.

What happens to my service if I move?
Nikkom works on any high-speed internet connection, so your Nikkom service will move with you. Since Nikkom service will work wherever as long as you have a high-speed Internet connection, you can use it in homes, offices, caf?s, and hotels.

Can I take my phone adapter with me when I travel?
Without a doubt, since Nikkom service will work anywhere you have access to a high-speed Internet connection. Don't forget to tell people you see while traveling about your Nikkom service, your savings, all of the Nikkom features, and how they can easily get Nikkom service anywhere in the world.

How do I change my phone number?
Just login to your Nikkom web account and click the My Account Tab. Once there simply select "Cancel Remote Virtual Number" and Order Another Remote Virtual Number. Please do note that your Nikkom billing account number will not change. Dont forget, you can choose a new number with an entirely new area code. You may choose a Nikkom number from our inventory of available numbers.

    How do you dial Internationally?
International calls are made using the same dial pattern that is used on a traditional phone. Simply dial 011, then the country code and then the number you are calling. If you are calling Canada you will NOT need to dial 011 or a country code, just dial the 11 digit phone number of the phone you are calling. It's that simple!

How many phone lines can I have?
Unlimited. As many as you would like and you save money every month on each one. Currently, we only support one primary line per device/account, therefore if you would like an additional primary number, you will need to open an additional account.

Do you have toll free service?
Yes, we do offer toll-free. Please check rates with customer service.

    Nikkom and Emergencies
Does Nikkom provide 911 or E911 services?
Nikkom provides E911 services in many areas. Please check with customer service if your area code is included in our E911 service.

Can I use your service with my home alarm system or personal emergency response services company?
Yes, simply by connecting your alarm to the Nikkom adaptor. However, we recommend that you keep a simple phone line for a home alarm or personal emergency response device. Remember that Nikkom depends on your broadband Internet connection. You will need to consult your current alarm service provider for further information.
